미래 뉴욕의 도시 건축적 대안에 대한 ‘New York City Vision’ 국제건축공모전에서 Selected Entry로 출판된 작업이다. 뉴욕의 지리학적 역사를 바탕으로 10억년 전에 형성된 단층 라인을 따라 현대의 도시 공간을 그대로 보존하여, 시간이 지남에 따라 주변의 개발지역과 극적으로 대조를 이루는 풍경을 연출하는 컨셉이다. 타임캡슐에 보존 된 것처럼, 단층 라인을 따라 몇 십년, 혹은 몇 백년동안 보존될 공간에는 잡풀들이 자라나고, 건물들은 바람과 햇볕에 닳아 점점 허물어져 간다. 공간은 박제되고, 박물관화 되며, 시간은 정지된다. 사물들은 물성을 잃어버리고, 과거-현재-미래라는 시간의 층위들이 복잡하게 섞인다. 공간의 비물질화는‘다가올 과거의 현재의 미래’와 같은 다중적 시간개념을 공간에 부여하면서, 미래가 곧 발전과 진보를 의미했던 선형적 역사관에 의해 끊임없이 개발되어 온 현대 도시를 비판적인 시각에서 바라보게 한다.
This project was published as a Selected Entry in the international architectural competition “New York City Vision,” which sought alternative urban futures for New York City. Rooted in the city’s geological history, the concept proposes the preservation of a fault line formed over a billion years ago as a continuous strip of untouched land running through contemporary Manhattan.
As surrounding areas undergo relentless urban development, this preserved line becomes a striking temporal and spatial contrast—a living time capsule. Over decades or even centuries, weeds overtake the site, buildings crumble under sun and wind, and the urban fabric erodes. The space becomes fossilized, museum-like, suspended in time. Matter loses its solidity; and the layers of past, present, and future dissolve into one another.
This dematerialization of space introduces a multi-temporal framework—what could be called “the future of the present of the past.” In doing so, the project challenges the linear narrative of history in which the future has always been equated with progress and development. Instead, it asks us to reflect critically on the myth of perpetual urban growth and to reimagine the city through absence, decay, and duration.
