『Sea Obscura』는 뉴욕 JFK 공항에서 유출되어 자메이카 만으로 흘러드는 항공기 제빙액(ADF)으로 인한 생태계 오염에 대응하는 생체 기반 미디어 설치 작업이다. 매년 33에이커의 습지를 소멸시키고 해양 생태계를 위협하는 이 보이지 않는 흐름에 대해, 작품은 백색 부후균(White Rot Fungi)을 활용한 정화 시스템을 제안한다. 중공섬유 구조 안에서 균류를 배양하는 멤브레인 반응기와 태양광 패널로 작동되는 모듈은, 독성 물질에 대한 미시적 생명체의 반응을 시각화하며, 감춰진 오염의 풍경을 드러낸다. 『Sea Obscura』는 비가시적인 생태적 작동과 유기적 기술 사이의 경계에서, 우리가 감지하지 못한 감각과 풍경을 상상하고 재구성하도록 유도한다.
The project proposes a solution to environmental concerns associated with the Aircraft De-Icing Fluid that runs off of JFK and enters Jamaica Bay untreated. The team proposes a modular system that cultivates White Rot Fungi, which treats the ADF in Jamaica Bay. As it exists today, it is unable to support local marine life and contributes to the receding of marshlands by 33 acres annually. The module is composed of two strips. One is the fungi membrane reactors which raises fungi in hollow fiber membrane cartridges, and the other provides energy generated by solar panels.
