본 프로젝트명인 Whale Rock 은 2014년 NASA 화성 탐사선 Curiosity에 의해 촬영된 암석으로 과거 화성에 물이 존재했을 것으로 추측되는 중요한 단서이다. 고대 화성에 존재했을 것으로 추정되는 호수로 이동하는 물의 흐름에 의해 형성된 잔물결 형태와 모래언덕 지형을 가지고 있으며 지질 현상에 의해 교차하며 전체적으로는 하늘로 솟아오른 형상을 하고 있다. 화성에서 물이라는 최초 생명의 실마리를 찾는 과정에서 발견된 돌에 대해 인간의 상상력으로 고래를 떠올렸다는 사실은 매우 흥미롭다. 바다의 고래와 화성의 돌, 바다와 우주는 그 광대한 거리만큼이나 인간에게는 두 극단의 미지의 영역이지만 ‘고래’라는 일종의 메타포를 통해 존재적 간극이 좁혀진다. 그리고 이러한 메타포는 지구와 화성 간 주고받는 400MHz의 전파를 통해 전송된 돌의 이미지에 의해 생성된다.한편 지구 아래편 고래의 커뮤니케이션 인간의 커뮤니케이션 우주와의 커뮤니케이션은 비동시성이라는 측면에서 유사한 방식으로 나타난다. 첨단기술과 인간의 상상력은 새로운 차원에서 물리적 영역을 뛰어넘는 ‘텔레프레즌스 tele-presence’의 가능성을 열어주며 본 프로젝트에서는 비동시적 커뮤니케이션에 기반한 새로운 매체media의 가능성과 세계에 대한 새로운 이해 방식을 탐색하고자 한다. Whale Rock is named after a Martian rock formation photographed in 2014 by NASA’s Curiosity rover. This geological structure—marked by ripple-like patterns and sand dune topographies formed by ancient water flows—serves as critical evidence that liquid water may have once existed on Mars. Shaped by intersecting sedimentary layers, the rock rises skyward, evoking the silhouette of a whale.
The human imagination's projection of a “whale” onto this Martian rock—discovered in the quest for traces of life via water—is both poetic and revealing. The whale of the ocean and the rock of Mars, the sea and the cosmos: these are vastly distant and unknown realms to humanity, yet the metaphor of the “whale” collapses this existential distance. This metaphor is made possible through the transmission of the rock’s image—sent via 400 MHz radio waves exchanged between Earth and Mars.
On Earth, whale communication, human communication, and interplanetary communication all share a common trait: asynchronicity. This temporal disconnect reveals a deeper connection between vastly different systems of meaning. In this project, the interplay of advanced technology and human imagination opens up the possibility of tele-presence—a sensory and cognitive presence across spatial and temporal divides. Whale Rock explores new media ecologies and alternative modes of understanding the world, grounded in asynchronous communication between bodies, species, and planets. (Text by Shim)
