참여형 메타버스 정원 플랫폼

잃어버린 종들의 정원은 멸종위기의 식물들을 중심으로 관객들이 만들고, 경험하고, 공유하기 위한 가상정원 만들기 메타버스 플랫폼이다. 현대 인류가 직면한 환경 문제는 단순히 자연 회복에 관한 문제가 아니라 인간―사회―환경 시스템에 대한 생태학적 접근을 요구하고 있다. 세계자연기금의 보고에 따르면 지난 40년간 척추동물의 절반이 사라지고, 지난 25년간 곤충의 개체 수가 4분의 3 감소하였다. 꽃과 곤충 사이의 공존관계가 파괴되고 있으며, 사슬처럼 연결되어 있는 생태계의 균형이 심각하게 훼손되고 있는 상황이다. 본 프로젝트에서는 메타버스라는 확장된 네트워크에 기반한 새로운 커뮤니케이션 방식을 통해 실재의 혹은 가상의 식물들을 재구성함으로써 타자화된 대상들에 대한 감각을 상기시키고, 실재―가상, 인공―자연, 과거―현재 (혹은 미래)의 경계를 넘나드는 새로운 환경 경험을 유도하는 메타버스의 가능성을 탐색한다. 관객은 메타버스에서 원하는 식물종과 오브젝트를 선택하여 가상 정원을 꾸밀수 있으며, 메타버스에서 만들어지는 정원은 전시장이 위치한 을지로 산림동의 해당 지점에 가면 실시간으로 AR로 감상할 수 있도록 하여, 온-오프라인, 가상-현실 연계를 통한 새로운 환경 경험이 가능하도록 하였다. The Garden of Lost Species is a metaverse platform for creating, experiencing, and sharing virtual gardens centered on endangered plants. Environmental crises faced by contemporary humanity call not only for the restoration of nature, but for a deeper ecological approach to the interlinked human–society–environment system. According to the WWF, vertebrate populations have declined by half over the past 40 years, and insect numbers have dropped by 75% in the last 25 years. The intricate web of coexistence—especially between flowers and insects—is collapsing, disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
This project reconstructs real and imagined plants within the expanded network of the metaverse, reviving our sensory connection to these marginalized species. It explores the potential of virtual gardens as a medium for crossing boundaries between real and virtual, artificial and natural, past and future environmental experiences. Participants can select plant species and digital objects to design their own gardens in the metaverse. These gardens are not confined to the screen: when visitors physically arrive at the exhibition site in Euljiro, Seoul, they can encounter the gardens in augmented reality—blurring the line between online and offline, virtual and physical space.
